Gideon- First step for when sin entangles

Gideon- First step for when sin entangles

Series: Gideon- Embracing faith leaving fear.

Read Judges 6:1-5

The story of Gideon begins after 40 years of peace followed by 7 years of hardship. One could make an argument that the people worked or walked themselves into this hardship. They took their eyes off of God. Perhaps it was a slow process. They began to look at the peace they had believing it was there by their hand. However, it was God who brought peace to the land. They took their eyes off of God and forgot who they were as a people and as individuals. They took their eyes off God and sin began to ensnare their life.

fox_thumb.jpgWe are just the same at times. When we forget God– forget who we are– sins entangles us.

The people become lost in a way and chase after everything except God. They look to the mountains to provide their safety and security and they lived in the caves. They were not meant to be hiding in caves and leaving in fear. In a way, so many of us live in our own caves, hiding and living in fear.

The people had good reason to live there. There was a security it brought.

However,God, in revealing himself to the people, also shared who they were to be. They were not to be a people living in fear. They had forgotten who brought them out of Egypt and provided for them. They had forgotten the one who revealed himself to them and showed them how they should live. God showed them the road to wholeness and it was with him. Yet they rejected him. Sin entangled its way into their life and they were not able to fully embrace the promise land that God promised them.

We read these activities and think that could not happen to me. Yet so many followers of Jesus are being choked by the weeds and distractions of life.

In the book of Judges we see the cycle of people fixing their eyes on God and following him, then walking away and putting their trust in other things. There were consequences in their life because of that. Now we are not under the Old Covenant. We are under Jesus and what the bible calls the New Covenant. The cycle seen in Judges can be experienced in our life as well. This is not meant to be. We fix our eyes on Jesus and know our need for him only to look to sin and move our eyes off Jesus and become entangled with sin.

When the letter of Hebrews was written, in the New Testament, I think the author saw this struggle in the church as well In chapter 10 we read, in light of all that Jesus has done; in light of who God is and all that he has done; we have a new way of living. Then in Chapter 12 the author calls us to throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so entangles us and run the race with perseverance. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus.

At the beginning of the story of Gideon (Judges 6:1-5), God is about to call Gideon in order to answer the prayers of God’s people and call his people back to him. It is when they are in a relationship with him wholeness is found. It is in relationships with Jesus that we have wholeness and freedom and security and peace.

Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. (Hebrews 10:22-23).

Perhaps you are caught in such a cycle or find yourself entangled with sin. The first step is to fix your eyes on Jesus; remember who God is. In a way we see this in Judges 6:6 as the people call out to God. They see they are impoverished without God and cry out to him.  They need him in order to live as they were created to be.

God is waiting for you.

Tips for Looking for God in My Life

Where is Jesus in my life? Do you find yourself wondering where God is in your journey?  We all find our self in a season at times, where we struggle to see God leading us.

Looking for God in your life? DSC01808

After service one day in the midst of a conversation someone shared with me.  You know I really think the way God works today is in small ways.  He shared we need to have eyes to see the small little L.E.D lights.  The lights are God at work, and as you see them they start to light our path.  They are God’s way of lighting your path.  But you have have to have eyes to see.

This is some great wisdom from a fellow believer on the journey with us.  So just where in your life have you seen the L.E.D lights?  Over the last week, month, 3 months, six months, year, where have the L.E.D lights been found?  Take a moment and write them down, where are you seeing God?  Is it in that small conservation? Perhaps someone was able to give you the words to express yourself?  Perhaps something unexpected?  Still struggling to start  a list, try writing out what you are thankful for. I am sure that will lead you to some L.E.D lights.

Here are four starting tips for looking for Jesus in our life.

1. Faith in Jesus

This is not a cop out.  Seriously, you have to believe and understand that God is at work.  Do you believe that God is great?  If he is, then you do not have to be in control of everything.  If we do not have faith that God is good enough, then we will look elsewhere for satisfaction.  In a way faith is what helps us get through the long waiting time.  It is like the oil the virgins carried or did not carry with them in Matthew 25.  Faith is about trusting that God is leading your life.  Faith is about following that call of God in your life.   Sometimes we struggle to see him because we allow the waves to be greater than he is.  We put more faith in something other than Jesus.

Make the choice today to trust Jesus.

2. Look for him.

Take a moment and look back.  Where do you see the little L.E.D lights that are the God moments in your life?   There is a good chance it was small, a conversation here, an impression to go left instead of right.  Do you see it, along your journey?  A conversation with a person, who just opened doors that were not there.  Perhaps it was physical doors or doors inside of you.   This is about asking the question, “Where am I seeing God at work?”  Where is the kingdom of God or God pushing into your life?  Why are you seeing this happen?  Why is this happening? What are you going to do now?

Take a moment and write it down.  Write down the God moments in your life.

3. Gathering with God’s community for Worship

I have watched people as they are  going through challenging times.  They gather with God’s people, and as we pray, sing and teach, God’s spirit softens their  hearts.  There is something about gathering with a healthy community of God’s people that can help bring proper perspective.  For many, this is the only time to pause, and be still and know God.  Our eyes begin to be opened to the L.E.D lights and we see the light on our path.  As we gather with God’s people we will listen to the stories of others, and through their journey God will speak to us about our journey.   Transformation takes place in community.

4. Spend time in God’s word

Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path”

Let the Scriptures remind you about who God is and what he has done.  As you understand and embrace that, you  can then understand who you  are and understand the path you are to walk.

Do you find yourself looking for Jesus in your life?  Try these four rhythms to see the L.E.D. lights.

Advent Can help Grow your Faith

0e1851833_series-4gsheaderThere is so much noise in life, and with the daily grind of life day in and day out, we can get a little lost.  Our culture can seem so dark at times, with so many running here and there.  Advent is about hope coming, and waiting on the Lord.

Advent is a season about waiting for the Lord.  It is season of seeking Jesus.  Advent is like the stones the Israelites used  when they set up a stone monument after crossing the river.   God did not tell the church to create advent, but perhaps the Holy Spirit secretly did.  We may never know, but Advent can be like those stones; A tool to remember who God is and what he has done.  Advent can be a reminder of our need, where we have come from, and where we are going.  When we understand who God is and what he has done, we find direction on who we are.

There is a place for the advent lighting in the larger community, but what will you practice in a smaller community and in your home.  How will you use this season to teach others about who God is?  How will you use this season to climb a mountain and meet with God? Then, celebrate on the 25th of December,  come back down and engage in mission work.

Advent challenges our daily grind, all is not lost.  Advent reminds us that God has not left us and hope is on its way. What will you seek the Lord for this advent season?

During the advent season what might you do differently to meet with God?

How will you search the Scriptures and everyday life to find Jesus?

What advent resources have you used to help journey in this season?
