What is a Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP)?

An RDSP is a long-term, tax-sheltered savings plan designed to help Canadians with disabilities (or their families) save for the future. It combines personal contributions, tax-free investment growth, and generous government support through grants and bonds.

Only about one-third of eligible Canadians currently have an RDSP — which means many are missing out on significant benefits.

  • Lifetime contribution limit: $200,000
  • Up to $70,000 in government grants
  • Up to $20,000 in government bonds
  • Investments grow tax-free

Realistic Example: How Powerful an RDSP Can Be

Zoe starts contributing just $1,500 per year at age 20 and continues for 40 years (until age 60). She qualifies for the maximum government grants and bonds, with investments growing at a realistic 5% average annual return.

$552,723

Total value at age 60

Zoe only contributed $30,000 of her own money — the rest came from government grants, bonds, and investment growth.

Government Grants & Bonds

Canada Disability Savings Grant

Up to $3,500 per year

Lifetime maximum: $70,000

Matching rates depend on family net income. Contributing $1,500/year often maximizes the grant.

Canada Disability Savings Bond

Up to $1,000 per year

Lifetime maximum: $20,000

No personal contribution required for lower-income families. Carry-forward available for up to 10 years.

Grants and bonds are generally available until the end of the year the plan beneficiary turns 49.

Who Qualifies for an RDSP?

  • Must be approved for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC)
  • Canadian resident with a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)
  • Age 59 or younger on December 31 of the year the plan is opened
